HRV system

Basic building code requires mechanical ventilation (i.e. fans) in every home. Installing a Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV) is the most effective and energy efficient option for your home.

When you have a basement waterproofing or crawl space encapsulation system installed, it's important to remember ventilation. As we tighten up our homes to make them more energy efficient and to stop moisture from entering the home via drafts, vents, and other air leaks, we still need to allow for the air flow we want.

Island Basement Systems installs heat recover ventilation system (HRVs) in conjunction with our basement and crawl space mitigation systems. Call us today at 1-250-385-2768 or contact us online to get a free estimate on one of our systems! We offer all our work in Victoria, Nanaimo, Saanich and throughout the surrounding areas.

Why heat recovery ventilators are the right choice

For homes that are reasonably airtight (under 5 Air Changes per Hour (ACH), installation of a Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV) is the most effective method of providing balanced, efficient mechanical ventilation of the home. In Vancouver, they are now required on every new home being built or for homes with major renovation changes. HRV are a great idea in most homes.

However, if the above-grade walls or ceiling are still leaky and drafty, then an HRV may not be very effective. Of course, we can help you tighten up your above-grade walls with our Island Building Seal division, who specialize in making above-grade walls and ceilings draftproof.

Why Is Ventilation So Important?

The main reason that ventilation is necessary is that our bodies and our activities load the air in our homes with moisture, odour, and carbon dioxide.

A heat recovery ventilator system works by taking a volume of warm, stale, humid indoor air and venting it to the outside with a fan. Simultaneously, an equal amount of fresh air from outside is brought in. From there, the air is then circulated to all areas of the house.

The two will bypass each other in these special channels, where the heat from the outgoing warm is effectively transferred to the incoming cold air (usually about 75-90% efficient). Thus the heat recovery ventilator -- basically a super-efficient fan-in-a-box!
