Basic building code requires mechanical ventilation (i.e. fans) in every home. Simple bathroom fans don't work very effectively, as they are are not energy saving at all, and tend to not be used effectively.
Installing a Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV) is the most effective and energy efficient option for your home.
Island Basement Systems can install your basic ventilation system in conjunction with our basement or crawlspace mitigation systems.
Why is this important? Well, as we tighten up our homes to make them more energy efficient and to stop moisture from entering the home via drafts, vents, etc, we still need to have good ventilation in the home.
For homes that are reasonably airtight (under 5 Air Changes per Hour (ACH), installation of a Heat Recovery Ventilator (HRV) is the most effective method of providing balanced, efficient mechanical ventilation of the home.
In Vancouver, they are now required on every new home being built or for homes with major renovation changes. HRV are a great idea in most homes.
However, if the above-grade walls or ceiling are still leaky and drafty, then an HRV may not be very effective. Of course, we can help you tighten up your above-grade walls with our Island Building Seal division, who specialize in making above-grade walls and ceilings draftproof.
Our HRV Installation Services are available to homeowners throughout Vancouver Island. The main reason that ventilation is necessary is that our bodies and our activities load the air in our homes with moisture, odour, and carbon dioxide.

An Heat Recovery Ventilator System works by taking a volume of warm, stale, humid indoor air and venting it to the outside with a fan. Simultaneously, an equal amount of fresh air from outside is brought in. From there, the air is then circulated to all areas of the house.
The two will bypass each other in these special channels, where the heat from the outgoing warm is effectively transferred to the incoming cold air (usually about 75-90% efficient).
Thus the Heat Recovery Ventilator -- basically a super-efficient fan-in-a-box!
